The new Saw X trailer teases fans what's in store in the newest installment, developing more of John Kramer's unexplored story arc while also going back to the raw and gritty torture horror that defined early films in the Saw franchise.

Anticipation builds for Saw X almost a week before the movie's pre-Halloween release. The film's cast and production leads revealed what makes this installment in the Saw franchise unique in the "Legacy" special trailer featurette, which features BTS footage and key scenes from previous films. The running message of the teaser was a return to the franchise's roots, with producer Mark Burg and director Kevin Greutert asserting they went out of their way to capture the tone and appearance of the earliest Saw movies.

Producer Oren Koules also confirmed where Saw X falls in the horror anthology's timeline, saying, "This in our mind is Saw II. This movie happens weeks after the end of Saw I." The movie thus effectively brings Tobin Bell's John Kramer back to life. "I hope people overcome inner obstacles," the actor shared. "My job is to bring humanity to John Kramer. The traps I leave to the people who are disturbed enough to come up with some of these things." Shawnee Smith also reprises her role as Amanda, the junkie who survived the brutal syringe needle pit in Saw II. "It's super fun to be able to come all the way back to the beginning," she said.

Saw X Is a Tribute to Fans

Koules also asserted Saw X continues with the tradition of referencing plots and characters threaded throughout the entire franchise, saying, "We really did this movie for the fans. We really tried to pay them back for the loyalty and the fans that have been there since Saw I. And that's why there's Easter eggs, there's throwbacks... We just really tried to say 'You've asked for this movie, we're making this for you.'" The aesthetic of the film will also emulate the first Saw films, which according to cinematographer Nick Matthews were shot on 35mm film and saturated with "ocher yellows and cynical greens."

Production designer Anthony Stabley assured fans will not be disappointed with Saw X's traps, which proved to be a challenge to innovate given there's enough deployed so far to make a list of the most horrific torture devices in the franchise. "One of the great challenges of this project was really putting together an excellent trap theme," Stabley admitted. "And I feel like we have this amazing team, and I think that the fans are going to be happy, all the people who really love Saw." Saw X does prove Jigsaw's torture methods are as horrific as ever with one of the film's traps recently teased.

Saw X releases in theaters on Sept. 29.
