Super Mario Bros. Wonder has gotten an overview trailer highlighting the game’s plot and numerous gameplay elements.

The game takes place in the Flower Kingdom, a land that Prince Florian rules. He invited Mario and his friends to the realm, but Bowser shows up and shockingly ruins everything. The kingdom is home to the “Wonder Flower,” which has unpredictable powers depending on who touches it and when. When Bowser touched the flower, he merged with Florian’s castle and subsequently warped the entire kingdom to his whims. Now, Mario and crew have to wander the Flower Kingdom and restore things to what they once were.

To do so, players will go through the seven main areas of the Flower Kingdom, each with its own unique look and atmosphere. Per past Mario games, each realm will have numerous levels and challenges to overcome. However, for the first time ever, Super Mario Bros Wonder will let players decide where to go in certain “open areas” that they'll come across. Thus, players can pick the levels they want to complete in the order they want.

A key feature of the new game is the wide variety of characters that the player can pick from. They can be Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, two different colors of Toads, Toadette, four different colored Yoshi’s, or Nabbit. Those last five are important to note as players won’t be damaged by those options unless they fall down chasms, making it an “easy mode” character to pick should they want to get through the levels. A set of new power-ups also await fans in the game, including the ability to become an elephant.

In “Bubble” form, players can unleash bubbles that trap and even kill enemies, including ones that aren’t easy to defeat with physical attacks. They can also use the bubbles to create platforms to jump off of. Finally, the Drill ability will let you attack enemies, destroy blocks, and even burrow into the ground or ceiling for safer movement. Plus, the Wonder Flowers will be on certain levels, and when gamers touch them, an “unexpected effect” will occur. When it does, the level could shift perspectives, Mario or the others could transform into something else, a stampede could happen, and more! To stop the chaos you must find a Wonder Seed as you traverse the warped level.

Super Mario Bros Wonder will arrive on Nintendo Switch on October 20.
