Spawn creator Todd McFarlane recently revealed that the writers behind the upcoming film reboot were only 30 pages away from finishing the latest draft of the screenplay when the Writers Guild of America strike began.

"We were in the middle of writing the script and then the writers strike came," McFarlane told ComicBook.com. "So that basically came to a screeching halt, if you will. But they were pretty far along in it, so I'm assuming that they've given it a lot of thought during the strike. They know what they're going to write, the last 30 pages, which is all they need to finish. And so as soon as the strike's over, I'm assuming they're going to quickly finish that up."

McFarlane continued, "We will do some rewrites. We'll go into Hollywood. We'll find a buyer, maybe we'll find a couple of buyers, get into a bidding war. And then we'll come back out and make the announcement that says, 'We've got the funding, the studio, and the production date all lined up. It's go time.'" The latest draft of Spawn is being written by Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier), Scott Silver (Joker) and Matthew Mixom, who boarded the project in October 2022.

Blumhouse Head Teases Spawn Release Window

Blumhouse Productions has been involved with the upcoming reboot since 2017. In a recent interview, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum stated that the Spawn reboot is still in "very, very active development" at the company and that he predicts that audiences will "actually see a Spawn movie in '25. No promises, but that's my prediction."

Who Is Spawn?

Created by McFarlane, Spawn first appeared in his self-titled solo series in May 1992 and was an immediate success in the United States, with the first issue selling 1.7 million copies. The character’s continued popularity led to a live-action film and an HBO animated series, which were both released in 1997. Michael Jai White led the Spawn film as Al Simmons, a murdered US Marine who is resurrected as Spawn, the reluctant leader of Hell's army.

Despite the film being critically panned, a sequel was planned but never made it out of development hell. A new film adaptation of Spawn has been in development since 2015 with Jamie Foxx attached to play the title role.

Spawn Comes to Call of Duty

The reluctant leader of Hell's Army has become the latest IP character to join Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone. After McFarlane teased the character's inclusion in an upcoming video game at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, Call of Duty has officially announced that Spawn will be part of Warzone Season 6, which begins on Sept. 27.
