Man of Steel screenwriter David S. Goyer recently shared that Tony Scott almost directed the 2013 superhero movie.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Goyer revealed that Zack Snyder and Scott were the top two choices to helm Man of Steel, with Snyder ultimately prevailing. "It was a very deliberative process. Chris met with I want to say about five directors and it came down to Zack and another director, and it felt like Zack was the right call. I think Zack was the right call. It was really exciting, the fact that Zack wanted to shoot that movie handheld, which was I thought a brilliant idea," Goyer explained. "What's interesting in the Elseworlds version of what could have been is, Chris had already met with Tony Scott, so there's a version of a Tony Scott Man of Steel in some parallel universe. I think Tony Scott doesn't get as much credit as he should be given, because he was an equally phenomenal director as his brother, and that's a movie I would have liked to have seen."

Man of Steel is the first installment in the DC Extended Universe and a reboot of the Christopher Reeve/Brandon Routh Superman film series. Henry Cavill portrays Clark Kent/Kal-El in the superhero film, which depicts the character's origin story as well as his first battle as Earth's protector, Superman. Michael Shannon stars as the film's main antagonist, General Zod, who seeks to transform Earth into a new Krypton. Although Man of Steel divided critics and fans, the movie was a major box office success, grossing $668 million worldwide.

Man of Steel 2 Almost Happened

Following the film's impressive box office run, Warner Bros. began developing a sequel, with Snyder slated to return as director. However, Man of Steel 2 was eventually reworked into the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which introduced Ben Affleck's Batman and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, set up several future films in the DCEU and featured the death of Superman. However, Cavill's beloved superhero didn't stay dead for long as the Man of Steel was resurrected in both 2017's Justice League and the 2021 director's cut, Zack Snyder's Justice League. Cavill made his final appearance as Superman in the 2022 film Black Adam after stand-ins portrayed the Man of Steel for the superhero's cameos in Shazam! (2019) and Peacemaker (2022).

David Corenswet Is the DCU's Superman

Superman will be rebooted for James Gunn's upcoming film, Superman: Legacy, with David Corenswet cast as the Big Blue Boy Scout. Rachel Brosnahan will co-star as his love interest/co-worker Lois Lane. Superman: Legacy is currently in pre-production with filming set to begin in early 2024. Plot details remain under wraps for Legacy, although Gunn said the film will be centered around Superman's heritage. The film has also been described as a "workplace origin story," suggesting that a good portion of the film will focus on Superman's civilian identity, Clark Kent, who is a reporter for the Daily Planet.
