The series is based on Daisuke Hagiwara's beloved high school comedy Horimiya, which itself was an adaptation of 2007's original shonen web comic, Hori-san to Miyamura-kun, written and illustrated by Hiroki Adachi, under the pseudo name Hero. Running in Square Enix's Monthly G Fantasy magazine since 2011, Hagiwara's adaptation concluded in March 2021 under Hero's supervision. Square Enix released the final compiled volume in July 2021, followed by the English version by Yen Press on May 23, 2023. An additional epilogue chapter was added to provide a fitting conclusion to this cherished tale.

The series revolves around a popular high school girl, Hori-san, who in reality, is simple and family-oriented. One day, she has a random run-in outside a classroom with Miyamura-kun, a seemingly average and gloomy fanboy, who's attractive but has a bad-boy streak and is covered in piercings and tattoos. The two unexpectedly bond and decide to help one another.

The final episode of Horimiya: The Missing Pieces is set to air on Sept. 23, 2023, on Crunchyroll.
