Homura's devil form was first seen in 2013's New Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie -Rebellion-, and the film's direct sequel has been announced. At the time of writing, an international release date for Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie - Walpurgisnacht: Rising- has not been confirmed, but the title will make its debut in Japan sometime at the beginning of next year. The new movie's trailer strongly suggests that the narrative will continue the series' iconic dark take on the magical girl genre. Walpurgisnacht: Rising- will star Chiwa Saito (Kuroko's Basketball) as Homura alongside Aoi Yūki (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury) as Madoka.

An original anime series by Magica Quartet, Puella Magi Madoka Magica premiered between January and April 2011, running for a total of twelve episodes. The show initially appears to be a relatively standard magical girl story with a cat-like creature named Kyubey granting children mystical powers to fight evil beings called witches. However, its horror elements and psychological thriller aspects quickly make themselves known, and the titular middle school student spends a fair portion of the plot wavering on whether to become magical or not.

Magica Quartet's anime performed very well upon release as it was seen by many as a refreshing spin on the well-established manga/anime subgenre; its home video release sold over 50,000 copies in Japan alone. It also won a plethora of awards, including the Grand Prize at the 15th Japan Media Arts Festival and twelve unique categories at the Newtype Anime Awards.

Moreover, Puella Magi Madoka Magica spawned a large multimedia franchise with the setting and characters being adapted across mediums. Alongside the tie-in film series, there are several spinoff manga and multiple video games. Notably, the smartphone game Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story inspired another anime series that focused on a new main character, Iroha Tamaki, who is on a journey to find her missing sister.

Both anime series are available to stream on Crunchyroll.
