Marvel has unveiled connecting variant covers from artist Josemaria Casanovas for the upcoming Thunderbolts series that shows the team taking on a formidable roster of the Marvel Universe's greatest villains.

The new Thunderbolts series was announced back in July and will be written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing and drawn by artist Geraldo Borges. The series will see the character of Bucky Barnes take on the new alias of the Revolution and recruit a team of deadly assassins, spies, and black ops agents for the Thunderbolts. Casanovas' connecting artwork appears on variant covers for all four issues of Thunderbolts and shows the team, including Black Widow, Sharon Carter AKA Destroyer, White Widow, Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, and Shang-Chi fighting off against Kingpin, American Kaiju, and Doctor Doom on their quest to defeat Red Skull.

A New Era for the Thunderbolts

Series writers Kelly and Lanzing promise fans a fresh and exciting take on the Thunderbolts team with their four-part story. “Alongside our old friend Geraldo Borges, we're taking this opportunity to tell a very different kind of team book,” Kelly and Lanzing said. “This is a whole new era for the Thunderbolts, and it starts with a four-part espionage epic, an ever-shifting cast and a single overarching goal: to tear down a century of Nazi evil with justice like lightning."

The Thunderbolts were created by Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley and first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #449 in January 1997. The team originated as a group of super-powered characters who helped protect the world after the Avengers were declared dead in 1996. Since then, there have been over ten different iterations of the team, often consisting of reformed super-villains. Barnes joins an impressive list of Thunderbolts leaders which includes Baron Zemo, Green Goblin, Luke Cage, Red Hulk, Taskmaster, U.S. Agent and Hawkeye.

It is set for release Dec. 20, 2024.
