Ahead of next month's New York Comic Con, Marvel has released a teaser for the resolution of the current X-Men crossover event, The Fall of X, but the tease isn't exactly a promising one for Marvel's mutants, because it suggests that the Fall of X is actually the fall of the House of X, calling back to Jonathan Hickman's epic revamp of the X-Men that occurred in 2019, and that January 2024 will begin the Rise of the Powers of X, also a Hickman callback.

The event (it is unclear if this will be a pair of miniseries or not) will be by Gerry Duggan and Kieron Gillen, the current writers of X-Men and Immortal X-Men, respectively, and drawn by Lucas Werneck (artist on Immortal X-Men) and R.B. Silva (coming off of Captain America: Symbol of Truth, but famously the original artist on the first Powers of X miniseries by Hickman back in 2019).

What is the Fall of X?

The teaser for the fall of the House of X and the rise of the Powers of X

The Fall of X began in this year's Hellfire Gala. The anti-mutant organization, Orchis, had been plotting behind the scenes against the X-Men for some time, and it finally chose this year's celebration of mutants, The Hellfire Gala, to strike. During the announcement of a brand-new team of X-Men, Nimrod, a powerful Sentinel agent of Orchis, landed in the middle of the celebration, killing most of the new X-Men team. A full Orchis force arrived, with Moira MacTaggert, former friend of the X-Men, fatally wounding Jean Grey. Orchis then revealed that all the medicine that the X-Men had been giving the world had been secretly tainted by Orchis, and it could be used to kill any human who has used the medicine.

With the threat of millions of humans dying at the hand of a mutant medicine, Charles Xavier was forced to send the 200,000 mutants on the island home of the X-Men, Krakoa, through teleportation portals, nominally to the X-Men home on Arakko (formerly known as Mars), but none of the mutants arrived at Arakko (as it turns out, they were diverted across the universe). Xavier believes he just killed hundreds of thousands of mutants. A handful of X-Men fought off Xavier's telepathic commands, and escaped on their own. These X-Men are now fighting an underground battle against the forces of Orchis, who are trying to turn the whole world against mutantkind.

What is the significance of the House of X and Powers of X?

While dubbed "The Fall of X" for the last few months, this new teaser reveals that it is really specifically The Fall of the House of X. The House of X is the term used to describe this current age of mutant prosperity, with them living together on the powerful mutant nation of Krakoa. At the same time that Jonathan Hickman introduced The House of X in 2019, he also revealed The Powers of X, a story set in a dark future where mutants and humans have been at war for years.

From the looks of this teaser, it appears that the end of the Fall of X is leading directly into setting up the dark future that Hickman teased back in 2019.

More details, though, will be forthcoming at NYCC, including perhaps who or what the New X-Men will be, something that Marvel teased a few months back.
