Magneto is returning, and just in time.

In a new teaser ahead of New York Comic Con (NYCC), Marvel announced The Ressurection of Magneto, a new comic project from X-Men Red writer Al Ewing and artist Luciano Vecchio. "Magneto returns for the X-Men's darkest hour in 'Resurrection of Magneto'!" reads the announcement on X (Twitter). It is one of several new series that will be highlighted at Marvel's Next Big Thing panel at NYCC. Other incoming projects include Fall of the House of X and Rise of the Powers of X by writers Gerry Duggan (X-Men) and Kieron Gillen (Immortal X-Men) and artists Lucas Werneck (Immortal X-Men) and R.B. Silva (Captain America: Symbol of Truth), and Avengers: Twilight by writer Chip Zdarsky (Daredevil) and artist Daniel Acuña (Black Panther).

The Fall and Rise of Magneto

Magneto perished during the Judgement Day crossover event in X-Men Red #7. After having his heart ripped out by Uranos, the Master of Magnetism was still able to will his way to a victory over the Eternal and died in Storm's arms shortly after. As a member of the Great Ring of Arakko, Magneto had willingly chosen to erase his Cerebro backup -- the key to the mutants' Ressurection Protocols -- thus making his resurrection by The Five impossible.

While Magneto's death helped ensure a mutant victory over the Eternals in Judgement Day, his presence has been missed by the Great Ring and the Quiet Council as they deal with the "Fall of X." On Earth, the Hellfire Gala turned out to be a trap set by Orchis, leading to the exile of almost all mutants from Krakoa and the apparent deaths of Jean Grey and Iceman, among other tragedies. Meanwhile, on Mars, the return of Genesis had led to civil war among the Arakkii.

While Magneto may be absent from the main Marvel timeline, he is currently starring in the five-issue limited series Magneto by writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Todd Nauck. Set during Magneto's tenure as the head of the New Mutants, the series explores the villain's dark past as he tries to turn a corner on his journey toward heroism.
