Current Wonder Woman scribe Tom King discussed how the late George Pérez, who himself had also worked on the character, inspired his own run on the Amazon Princess.

While giving an interview to DC Nation, King was asked what it meant to him and artist Daniel Sampere to relaunch Wonder Woman's comic, to which he replied, "At George Pérez's funeral, they played a video George had recorded before his death. In it he said his greatest accomplishment was doing something incredible and interesting with Wonder Woman, that she was a hard character to get right, and he had gotten her right. I remember watching that and feeling so intimidated, and also so challenged."

King said that Wonder Woman was an "absolute icon" who deserved compelling stories that are "as smart and tough as the people who love her". The writer added, "George is right, it’s hard as hell to get her right. But it can be done and it has to be done, and Daniel and I are going to do it."

Prior to this, King spoke about what made Wonder Woman different from Superman and Batman and how it made her stand out as a hero in an interview with CBR. "The thing that occurred the most to me was that she's rebellious. Wonder Woman is the rebel. She's the one who makes her mother upset," he explained.

Regarding the comic itself, King touched upon the new villain he and Sampere introduced in Wonder Woman #1, who he said is "on par with Lex Luthor or The Joker" and is aware of how powerful the titular hero is. The writer further stated that this villain has a plan to strike Wonder Woman's heart and how the latter responds and fights back makes up the story.

Wonder Woman #1 is now on sale from DC Comics.
