Marvel has announced that a new comic series in the Planet of the Apes universe will be arriving in January 2024.

A four-part miniseries, Beware the Planet of the Apes, will be written Marc Guggenheim and artist Álvaro López. The comics are set as a prequel to the original 1968 film Planet of the Apes and will feature classic characters including Cornelius, Zira, and Nova. Set in a hostile world run by aggressive gorillas, scientists Cornelius and Zira are the only apes alive who see value in the mute human race, despite knowing that human capabilities have severe limits. When their nephew Lucius goes missing, they enlist the help of a young human woman who will one day go on to earn the moniker 'Nova.'

Marc Guggenheim Teases Surprises

Speaking about his passion for the original film series, writer Guggenheim said, "I’ve been entertained and intrigued by Planet of the Apes ever since I got a Mego Doctor Zaius doll as a birthday present, and my local television station ran the original pentalogy every afternoon for a week in the summertime. In many ways, Apes is one of the OG franchises, filled with mystery, fascinating characters, and some truly off-the-wall surprises." Guggenheim plans to bring his dedication to the Planet of the Apes franchise to the comics. "That’s the spirit I’m working to evoke with Beware the Planet of the Apes," he said. "I’m particularly excited that we’re going to be reusing some of Doug Moench, George Tuska, and Alfredo Alcala’s original Marvel work on Adventures of the Planet of the Apes as a part of our storytelling."

Marvel announced that they had reacquired the rights to publish new Planet of the Apes stories in 2022. They first brought the Planet of the Apes stories to the pages of comic books in 1974, and a year later released Adventures of the Planet of the Apes which offered fans full-color adaptations of the first two films. The series, which spanned 11 issues, was written by Doug Moench. In addition to comics and films, the long-running franchise also has released books, television series, video games and toys.

The first issue of Beware the Planet of the Apes will be released on Jan. 3 from Marvel Comics.
