Guillermo del Toro has teased the Star Wars movie he was set to direct for Lucasfilm after the project's screenwriter, David S. Goyer, revealed its existence during a recent interview.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Goyer disclosed that he wrote a script for a Star Wars movie about four years ago that del Toro would have directed. As for why the project never moved forward, Goyer stated that "there was a lot of stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time," before adding that it was "a cool script." After Horowitz shared a clip of the interview on X, del Toro confirmed the news, writing, "True. Can’t say much. Maybe two letters 'J' and 'BB' is that three letters?"

While Goyer and del Toro didn't divulge any further details regarding their scrapped film, Star Wars fans quickly took to social media to try and figure out who or what del Toro's letters could be referencing. Many fans took the "BB" to mean BB-8, the lovable droid from the Star Wars sequel trilogy, while others understood "J" to mean Jedi. However, the letter J spoken out loud sounds similar to the word "Rey," who was the protagonist of the sequel trilogy. Unfortunately, unless del Toro or Goyer choose to share more details, fans will never know how those letters are related to the scrapped Star Wars movie.

Star Wars' Big Screen Hiatus Is Coming to an End

Lucasfilm and Disney have not released a Star Wars movie on the big screen since 2019, which is when Goyer and del Toro's movie was reportedly in development. Following the release of 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm focused on expanding the galaxy far, far away on the small screen with acclaimed Disney+ series like The Mandalorian, Andor and Ahsoka. However, Lucasfilm has now turned its attention back to the big screen, with several features currently in various stages of development, including an untitled film set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker's events that will feature Daisy Ridley's Rey.

Other Star Wars movies in development include an untitled feature from James Mangold that will explore the birth of the Force, a MandoVerse movie from Dave Filoni rumored to be an adaptation of the beloved Star Wars Legends novel Heir to the Empire, and Donald and Stephen Glover's Lando Calrissian movie, as well as untitled mystery films from filmmakers Taika Waititi and Shawn Levy. Rian Johnson and Patty Jenkins are also working on Star Wars projects, although they are not in active development at his time.
