The latest Disney+ series set in the Star Wars galaxy, Ahsoka, is one of the franchise's most exciting projects in recent memory. The streaming series brings back multiple fan-favorite characters from previous Star Wars series, including Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), General Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), Chopper, Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) and Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen). While the series primarily looks to the future of the Star Wars franchise, one returning character's past may have major ramifications on future seasons of another Disney+ series, The Mandalorian.

Ahsoka brings back David Tennant's Huyang, a droid who had previously been employed by the Jedi Order prior to the Great Jedi Purge. Huyang previously appeared in several episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, beginning with the season five episode "A Test of Strength." Serving as Ahsoka's companion on her new adventures, Huyang initially seems to simply be a fun callback to an enjoyable character from a previous animated series. However, showrunner Dave Filoni didn't bring Huyang back on a whim. In fact, the droid may be far more important to the Star Wars franchise's future than audiences originally thought, primarily due to his vast knowledge of lightsabers.

Huyang Could Rebuild the Darksaber

The droid Huyang, voiced by David Tennant, in Ahsoka.

Huyang is crucial to Star Wars' future, specifically regarding how the Mandalorians' story will play out now that they have unconquered their homeworld. Without the Darksaber, a key piece of Mandalorian history is missing, as this unique Jedi blade was used to determine who would rule the people of Mandalore. Unfortunately, the blade was broken by Moff Gideon's forces in The Mandalorian Season 3, leaving Bo Katan (Katee Sackoff) and her people without the symbol of leadership that had guided them for centuries. However, Huyang has the unique knowledge necessary to rebuild this fabled blade and return it to the Mandalorians once more.

While Huyang has mostly been used to assist in Sabine Wren's lightsaber training during the events of Ahsoka, he is far more than a combat instructor. During the days of the Jedi Order, Huyang was used as a database containing the designs for every single Jedi lightsaber ever crafted. This would include the Darksaber, which was crafted by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian Jedi. Since the blade was made under Jedi supervision, it stands to reason that Huyang would have a copy of its design in his vast databank. As such, he -- with the help of a Force-wielder like Ahsoka -- would be able to make a perfect recreation of the Darksaber, reinstating the Mandalorian symbol of power and leadership.

What the Darksaber's Return Would Mean for The Mandalorian Season 4

Bo-Katan Kryze wields the Darksaber

The Darksaber is more than a regular lightsaber but can influence the entire future of the Mandalorian people. If the Darksaber were to be reforged by Huyang, it could either strengthen the Mandalorians or tear them apart once more. The ending of The Mandalorian Season 3 seemed to imply that the remaining Mandalorians were willing to follow Bo Katan as their leader regardless of whether or not she held the Darksaber, suggesting that they had left this part of their history behind. However, with the blade's return, some Mandalorians might be more inclined to follow her, strengthening her rule over the people and instituting a new golden age for Mandalore.

However, there is a reason Bo Katan desperately wanted the Darksaber when it was in Din Djarin's possession. The Mandalorian's loyalty to leadership is a fickle thing and can easily be swayed based on tradition. If someone other than Bo Katan was able to get their hands on the Darksaber, they could stir a sizeable faction of Mandalorians to abandon her rule and follow a new leader. If this were to happen, yet another civil war could break out among the Mandalorians, forcing Bo Katan to once more fight for the rightful rule over her people.

Huyang's inclusion in Ahsoka may seem rather random, but the character's return could have major ramifications for the future of Star Wars television. His particular skill set has the potential to make or break the future of Mandalore, portending another civil war in The Mandalorian Season 4.
