The following contains spoilers for The Witcher Season 3, Volume 2, streaming now on Netflix.

The Witcher director Bola Ogun recently opened up about Henry Cavill's final scene as series protagonist Geralt of Rivia in Season 3, Volume 2.

Ogun, who is credited with directing the last two episodes of Season 3's second volume, unpacked Cavill's swansong scene in an interview with Polygon. "The way that it was written and the way they designed it -- because so much is changing already, so much is going down in the season, it almost felt like it was a nice chapter closing on its own," she said. Ogun added that The Witcher Season 3, Volume 2 was purposefully "a little more emotional" overall, to convey "the feeling of something changing." "Basically, it was just trying to create a continuation but make it feel different, make it feel like it was a long, soft goodbye," she explained.

Cavill's departure from The Witcher has garnered plenty of attention since it was announced in October 2022. The British actor is arguably the Netflix fantasy show's biggest draw, winning over fans with his deep knowledge of Andrzej Sapkowski's original Witcher novels and short stories. Cavill's co-star Anya Chalotra recently acknowledged how much the wider cast relies on his familiarity with The Witcher's source material, describing it as "a blessing." "[T]here are days when you might disbelieve the world a little bit more than the next. And he's there to go, 'Hang on, we've got this,'" she said.

At the same time, Chalotra has made it clear she's not concerned that Cavill stepping down from the Geralt role might derail the entire series. Chalotra, who plays Yennefer of Vengerberg, also predicted that Cavill's replacement, Liam Hemsworth, will make for an equally effective Geralt. "I'm not worried. [Hemsworth's] going to be brilliant. I really think so," she said. The actor went on to say that, while Cavill was "incredible" as Geralt, the prospect of a new leading man joining The Witcher's cast is "so exciting."

Executive producer Tomek Baginski evidently shares Chalotra's enthusiasm for Hemsworth's arrival, as he recently teased the "very, very good plan" to handle the Aussie actor's introduction in The Witcher Season 4. "[I]t will be a new Geralt, it will be a new face for this character," Baginski said. "And I think it will also be very, very exciting to see."
