The following contains spoilers for Ahsoka Episode 6, "Part Six: Far, Far Away," streaming now on Disney+.

The sixth chapter of the Ahsoka series on Disney+ revealed much that Star Wars fans have been waiting for since the series was announced. The episode revealed the whereabouts of Ezra Bridger, and how the nine years since he departed changed him. It also revealed Grand Admiral Thrawn, and how little that same time has changed him. However, the revelation of the Great Mothers and the ruins of the Great Witch Kingdom of the Dathomiri make these dark side magic users the most powerful group in all of Star Wars.

The Dathomiri can trace their real-world origins to the oft-forgotten TV movie from the 1980s, Ewoks: The Battle for Endor. One of the villains, a Force-endowed magic-user named Charal, was born of Lucas's idea that there were other ways to use the Force than how the Jedi or Sith did. In a later novel, The Courtship of Princess Leia by Dave Wolverton, now classified as Star Wars Legends, introduced the planet Dathomir. In that story, a group of Force-powered witches menaced the Jedi in the past and a stranded garrison of Imperial fighters. It wasn't until The Clone Wars when a red-robed character design for Sith witches was given to the coven of witches on Dathomir called the Nightsisters. They were allied with Palpatine for a time, until he sent General Grievous and Count Dooku to annihilate them. Save for a few surviving members, like Merrin from the Jedi: Fallen Order game series and Morgan Elsbeth, they are gone from the Star Wars galaxy. However, with the Great Mothers on Peridea, that could change. Even if it doesn't, settling in two galaxies "before time was counted" makes the Dathomiri witches incredibly powerful.

Who Are the Most Powerful Groups in the Star Wars Universe?

A mural of the Father, the Daughter, and the Son of Mortis from Star Wars: The Clone Wars

When it comes to powerful people in Star Wars, fans' minds immediately go to both the Jedi and the Sith. The lightsaber wielding warriors are part of the central conflict of the saga. Before the prequels, the Jedi were strong candidates for "most powerful," because they'd defeated the Sith a millennia ago. In truth, the dark side zealots just went into hiding, avoiding their hated enemies until Palpatine was able to orchestrated his master plan to eliminate the Jedi Order. Yet, as Snoke said in The Last Jedi, "darkness rises and light to meet it." Fallen Jedi Baylon Skoll reiterates this idea, when telling Shin Hati about the ongoing cycle that sees the fall of the Jedi and, eventually, its resurgence.

Yet, there are far more powerful groups than the Jedi. The first that come to mind are the Mortis Gods, from the three-episode arc in Season 3 of The Clone Wars. (Interestingly, the episodes preceding this one were the ones that introduced the Nightsisters.) A trio of beings, the Father kept the son, a personification of the dark side, and the daughter, a personification of the light, in check. The Father wanted Anakin Skywalker to take his place, however he, along with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka, ultimately leave after these three beings are killed. It's unclear what species these beings were or where they originated from. While very powerful, they weren't immortal. Though, it's possible Anakin has finally taken on the Father's role in the World Between Worlds.

In The Clone Wars shortened Season 6, Yoda goes on a journey to learn about the mysteries of the Living and Cosmic Force. He finds a planet at the center of a nebula where the midichlorians are created, and meets the Five Priestesses, also known as the Sages. These are beings who exist only in the Force and appear as robed figures wearing masks displaying a single emotion. They test Yoda and start him on the path to learning how to appear as a Force Ghost. Still, while these beings are incredibly powerful, they aren't physical beings.

Why the Great Witch Kingdom of the Dathomiri May Be Star Wars' Most Powerful Beings

Ahsoka-Great-Mothers

From what Morgan Elsbeth tells Baylon and Shin Hati, the Dathomiri traveled to the Star Wars galaxy from Peridea long before the galaxy itself was "settled." The ruins audiences see in Ahsoka suggest a great, powerful society. However, since Peridea itself is a wasteland, it may be safe to assume the Nightsisters died out here as well. Of course, as Star Wars fans know, death isn't the end for the Dathomiri. In The Clone Wars, Jedi: Fallen Order and Ahsoka, with Marrok, they've brought the dead back to fight for them before. While the surviving Great Mothers may need Thrawn's help to take them and their mysterious cargo to the Star Wars galaxy, they didn't always.

Knowing that the Witch Kingdom of the Dathomiri was able to travel between galaxies by "riding" the purrgil makes them pioneers. Andor, oddly, canonized the Rakata, the previous species who first discovered hyperspace travel introduced in the Knights of the Old Republic game. Yet, the Nightsisters may even predate them. Given the history of Peridea and the witches are "fables" for Jedi Children, it suggests they may have been the first dark side threat the early Jedi Order stamped out of the galaxy. This may be why Mother Talzin was so eager to help Palpatine bring them down.

Still, until fans learn more about the history of the Dathomiri and the Nightsisters, what they've learned from Ahsoka thus far suggests they were once the most powerful group in the Star Wars universe. They harnessed the power of the Force, with their dark magick, and traveled between galaxies, settling on Dathomir and who knows where else in the galaxy. They had a great and powerful society on Peridea, as well as the world where Ahsoka first discovered the starmap. They built giant structures and did many other impossible things. Their power may have waned once the Jedi and Sith rose to have their cyclical conflicts. Yet, at one time at least, the Nightsisters and the Great Witch Kingdom of the Dathomiri had no equals in the Star Wars universe.
