Heir to the Empire

Long before Disney bought Lucasfilm, Thrawn made his first Star Wars appearance in the 1990s novel trilogy, Heir to the Empire, written by Timothy Zahn. The acclaimed trilogy -- often considered by the Star Wars fandom to be some of the best content from the "Expanded Universe/Legends" canon -- followed Thrawn's attempt to bring down the New Republic and restore the Galactic Empire to power. After Disney redefined Star Wars continuity in 2014, Thrawn was reintroduced to the franchise in Star Wars Rebels. Zahn also returned to write two trilogies of novels -- Thrawn (2017-19) and Thrawn Ascendancy (2020-21).

Zahn recently shared his thoughts on Thrawn making his live-action debut in Ahsoka, with Lars Mikkelsen returning to portray the character after voicing the beloved villain in Rebels. While attending Dragon Con 2023, Zahn revealed that he was "very excited" about Thrawn appearing in live-action, "especially when it’s under Dave Filoni's tutelage." He added, "He’d shown back in Rebels that he understands Thrawn, understands how to write for him, understands how you defeat him. You give him something he can’t control or something he doesn’t know."

While unconfirmed, Thrawn is expected to be the main antagonist of Filoni's upcoming Star Wars movie, which is rumored to be a loose adaptation of Zahn's Heir to the Empire trilogy. However, at this time, Lucasfilm merely describes Filoni's movie as a "culmination" of narrative events surrounding the post-Return of the Jedi series -- The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and the upcoming Skeleton Crew -- on Disney+. It is also unknown who will be starring in the movie, with The Mandalorian co-creator Jon Favreau stating that the story will determine which characters from the series end up appearing.

The first six episodes of Ahsoka are streaming on Disney+.
