Blue Beetle had the fourth-best second weekend hold in the DC Extended Universe's history, as well as the best hold since 2020's Birds of Prey.

According to box office analyst Luiz Fernando on X (formerly Twitter), Blue Beetle earned $12.2 million in its second weekend domestically, representing a 51.1 percent drop from its opening weekend gross of $25 million. This is the best hold for a DCEU movie since Birds of Prey (48% drop) as well as the fourth-best hold overall after Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman (43.3%) and Aquaman (23.2%). It is worth noting that both Joker (41.9%) and The Batman (50.4%), which are not part of the DCEU, had better second weekend holds than Blue Beetle. As well, National Cinema Day's $4 ticket prices on Sunday likely helped boost Blue Beetle's second weekend box office take.

At the time of writing, Blue Beetle has earned $45.7 million domestically and another $35.8 million in international markets for a worldwide total of $81.5 million. Despite largely positive reviews from both critics and audiences, the DCEU movie has struggled at the box office. However, Blue Beetle is expected to outdo fellow 2023 DC title, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, at the box office. Blue Beetle is currently projected to end its theatrical run somewhere between $140 and $170 million, which would surpass the $133.8 million that Fury of the Gods earned earlier this year. Both titles, however, fall short of the $268.5 million that The Flash netted this summer.

Blue Beetle Will Return in the DCU

Luckily for fans, the film's box office doesn't matter too much as DC Studios head James Gunn has already confirmed that Xolo Maridueña's Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle will continue his superhero journey in his forthcoming DC Universe reboot. Gunn recently revealed that Blue Beetle will be an "amazing part of the DCU going forward," signaling that the young superhero has a future despite his box office struggles. Director Ángel Manuel Soto has already indicated that he has ideas for a sequel, such as sending Jaime to find/rescue Ted Kord -- the second Blue Beetle.

In Blue Beetle, "college graduate Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab." The synopsis continues, "When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE."

Blue Beetle is currently playing in theaters.
