Following a theatrical run that fell far short of studio expectations, The Flash will very soon start streaming on Max.

A big-budget film that had been predicted by many to be among the most successful blockbusters of the year, The Flash didn't manage to reach the numbers that Warner Bros. had been hoping for when it was released in theaters on June 16. The film had performed much better when it arrived on digital, quickly rising to the top of the VOD charts upon its release on July 18. On Friday, Max announced that The Flash will next start streaming on the platform on Aug. 25.

The wait marks the longest for any major DC movie from its release in theaters to its streaming premiere on Max. Setting the film for an Aug. 25 release on Max will result in a 70-day wait, surpassing the previous record held by Shazam! Fury of the Gods with 67 days. The film's arrival on Max also comes as The Flash wraps up its run in theaters, garnering around $268 million worldwide. A strong streaming performance on Max would help soothe the wounds felt at the studio for the movie underperforming in theaters, which perhaps stings all the more with Barbie and Oppenheimer immediately going on to pull in astronomical amounts of money at the box office.

Starring Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash, The Flash also notably brought back Michael Keaton to reprise his role as Batman from Tim Burton's classic films. Sasha Calle also starred as Supergirl, while the film also included cameos from several other Batman and Superman variants from years past. Andy Muschietti directed the film using a screenplay by Christina Hodson, with a story by John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein, and Joby Harold.

The Flash Doesn't Seem Likely to Get a Sequel

Even if The Flash pulls in high viewership on Max, the film isn't likely to get a sequel, given the money that has been lost due to the movie's high budget and marketing costs. It had been previously reported that a script for The Flash 2 was written and ready to go for a potential sequel order, but it doesn't seem likely Warner Bros. will roll the dice again with Ezra Miller's Scarlet Speedster. With James Gunn and Peter Safran mapping out all-new plans for their DCU, The Flash may be the end of Barry Allen's journey -- at least the one played by Miller.

The Flash will start streaming on Max on Aug. 25.
