Spawn is coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone Season 6 in a highly anticipated crossover.

Call of Duty revealed on its official X (formerly Twitter) account that the reluctant leader of Hell's Army Spawn will join the game's sixth installment. Spawn creator Todd McFarlane teased the appearance of the fan-favorite character during a spotlight panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2023 back in July.

"In October, we'll be making an announcement where Spawn will be in one of the biggest video games. He'll be a character in one of the biggest games on the planet. Look forward to that in October," he said. McFarlane's comment left fans to speculate at the time which video game property had acquired the rights to feature Spawn, with some popular choices being Minecraft, Call of Duty, and Fortnite. Call of Duty is no stranger to crossing over with superheroes. Characters from the comic book and hit Amazon television series The Boys have appeared in Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Warzone.

Spawn first appeared in his self-titled solo series in May 1992 and was an immediate success in the United States, with the first issue selling 1.7 million copies. The Spawn comic book's continued popularity inspired a live-action film and an HBO animated series, both released in 1997. Michael Jai White led the Spawn film portraying Al Simmons, a murdered US Marine who was resurrected and became the titular character. The movie did not fare well with critics and as a result Spawn's planned sequel never came to fruition.

Todd McFarlane Doesn't Let Fans Influence His Work

McFarlane does not believe fans should affect his creative process and his choices regarding his work, "People vote with their dollars. You don't need to read people's comments and stuff like that. You're never going to please everybody," he said. The creator also revealed he ultimately did not care whether fans would buy or pass on an issue, "I'm not interested in why you didn't buy it, and to some extent, I'm equally disinterested in why you did buy it because I'm not looking for your approval," McFarlane explained.

In an era that has seen social media facilitate an ever-increasing discourse between creators and fans, with the latter being more vocal and seeking to have their voices heard, McFarlane doubled down on his opinion, "All I can do is make a product, finish it, and offer it up for sale. And that's it! I don't redo it. I don't go back and edit it depending on the comments, you know? I'm not negotiating with the fanbase on any level," he said.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Warzone Season 6 arrives on September 27, 2023.
