Summary

  • The Spectacular Spider-Man should continue by following in the footsteps of Young Justice.
  • Young Justice was able to continue the series due to fan demand, and there's plenty of that for The Spectacular Spider-Man.
  • By utilizing Young Justice's time jump tactic, The Spectacular Spider-Man can stay relevant to its original audience.

When The Spectacular Spider-Man began airing on TV, Marvel fans were unprepared for what it would offer. The series was destined for success due to its fascinating storylines, expansive universe, and comic-accurate characters. Unfortunately, the series, after only two seasons that ran from 2008 to 2009, left viewers disappointed when it got canceled.

Last year, Netflix reintroduced The Spectacular Spider-Man onto its platform. Since then, the show has found a new audience and is still praised for its stories and classic lessons taught to Peter Parker (Josh Keaton) as he navigates high school while being a superhero. His two best friends, Gwen Stacy (Lacey Chabert) and Harry Osborne (James Arnold Taylor), get him in and out of trouble as he fights villains like Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Sandman, Rhino, Venom and Lizard. Other classic characters such as Flash Thompson, Black Cat, Liz and Mary Jane Watson assume their roles as secondary characters and help Peter navigate his social life. With crushes, bullying and curfews, Peter has his work cut out for him. This was why his character was so relatable in this particular series. The Spectacular Spider-Man ended far too soon, but that shouldn't mean fans should give up entirely.

Netflix Has Dealt With Revivals Before

The titular Web-Slinger holds his love interests in the Spectacular Spider-Man

Netflix is notorious for giving shows a second life, such as Fuller House, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, Lucifer and many more. Fuller House and Gilmore Girls were revivals of older series, but Lucifer was canceled on Fox and needed a new home. Netflix seized the opportunity and delivered a worthwhile ending for the fans. The streaming service has a lot of influence.

For instance, Netflix's high viewership of DC's animated series Young Justice led to its return in 2019. Fans banded together and created a movement on Twitter, and look where that got them: a new season on DC Universe and another on HBO Max. Warner Bros. Animation felt it was worth bringing it back after fans reacted positively, and it led to two more seasons. Sure, there were some minor changes, but Young Justice didn't miss a beat. Granted, it's unclear if there will be a Season 5 of Young Justice, but there seems to have been enough for fans to be satisfied.

Greg Weisman was one of the developers of The Spectacular Spider-Man. He also produced, wrote and developed Young Justice. What Weisman does with his superhero characters is commendable, as the stories he shares dive into real-life issues. Of course, Young Justice had more time to try out mature content, but his Spider-Man series may have seen the same outcome happen if given the chance. Each episode was connected to the last, which kept the audience thrilled to see the next part. And as the story progressed, so did the maturity of Peter and his friends. Weisman never gave up on Young Justice, keeping high hopes for the series for many years. The same thing should happen for The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Why Was The Spectacular Spider-Man Canceled?

BLACK CAT APPEARANCES - The Spectacular Spider-Man

Although both series were great animated adaptations, it didn't save them from getting axed. The Spectacular Spider-Man's rise and fall stemmed from an agreement between Disney and Sony. Sony had to give up ownership of Spider-Man in films or TV shows. It chose the latter, as movies make more money, and it would ultimately have more control over the character. However, after over a decade and many projects, The Spectacular Spider-Man is still praised as arguably the best Spider-Man portrayal by many.

When it comes to Spider-Man animated TV shows, they haven't seen consistent success. The latest series, Spider-Man, received mixed reviews and was canceled after three years. Its predecessor, Ultimate Spider-Man, had a similar outcome. The last objectively good show was The Spectacular Spider-Man. It did not rely solely on comedic timing or gimmicks but on passion for the source material. It was similar to the beloved Spider-Man: The Animated Series from the 1990s, which also had a surprising cancellation. Spider-Man shows appear to follow a pattern of unexpected cancelations followed by rapid reboots. And with the early exit for Spider-Man (2017-2020), Spider-Man: Freshman Year will take over its spot in 2024. Fans will have to wait and see to determine whether this new show is worth a watch, but that doesn't mean there still isn't room for The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Time Jumps Can Help The Spectacular Spider-Man's Narrative

Young Justice stayed relevant even after a large hiatus because of its use of time jumps. At first, it was a bit odd for the creators to choose to use a time jump between Seasons 1 and 2, but fans eventually accepted the change. After that, a time jump felt necessary between Seasons 2 and 3. It gave an opportunity to introduce new characters and plots, such as the conflict between the Justice League and the Outsiders. And eventually, it tackled more mature topics, such as mental health with Beast Boy's downward spiral in Season 4 after Geo-Force's betrayal and Superboy's "death." These storylines were what kept Young Justice entertaining because they were appealing to the right audience. The majority of the show's original demographic were teens and young adults, and as they got older in life, so did their issues.

If The Spectacular Spider-Man came back, the show would also have to change with its audience. The show was aimed at an even younger demographic than Young Justice, but those kids have also grown up, meaning a similar path can be followed. In fact, Josh Keaton's surprise appearance as his version of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is proof those very people still want more. The Spectacular Spider-Man has always been highly regarded for its incredible storytelling and consistency, and it's about time it gets another crack at telling Peter's story.
