Sofia Vergara looks unrecognizable in Netflix’s Griselda teaser trailer in which she stars as the Colombian drug lord.
Vergara plays the drug lord in the titular role on the limited series and gets down to business in the short trailer. Griselda is a production from the minds behind Narcos and Narcos: Mexico, brought to life by the creative duo Eric Newman and Doug Miro. Joining them as executive producers are Ingrid Escajeda, who also shares co-showrunner responsibilities with Miro and Carlo Bernard. All episodes are directed by Andrés Baiz, while Vergara and Luis Balaguer, representing Latin World Entertainment, serve as executive producers.
Griselda Blanco was known by aliases such as the Black Widow, La Madrina, and the Cocaine Godmother, held a position of immense influence as one of the leading cocaine traffickers during the 1980s and played a pivotal role in Miami's drug wars. According to Netflix, the Griselda synopsis is as follows: “Griselda is inspired by the life of the savvy and ambitious Colombian, Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. In the 1970s-80s Miami, Blanco’s lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helped her expertly navigate between business and family, leading her to become widely known as ‘the Godmother.'”
The series is based on a similar theme to Netflix hit show Narcos but it will have its unique flair. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Narcos showrunner Eric Newman opened up about how the series is a passion project for Vergara and described Griselda as a "cousin" to the Narcos franchise because it has a lot of similar elements to the story but made it clear that the series is very different.

The cast of Griselda includes Alberto Guerra in the role of Dario Sepúlveda, Christian Tappan as Arturo Mesa, Martín Rodríguez as Rivi Ayala, Juliana Aidén Martinez portraying June Hawkins, and Vanessa Ferlito as Carmen Gutiérrez. Notable guest stars include Carolina Giraldo, also known as Karol G, who takes on the character Carla, Fredy Yate as Chucho Castro, Paulina Dávila as Isabel, José Zúñiga as Amilcar, and Camilo Jiménez Varón in the role of Rafa Salazar.
The Griselda miniseries will premiere on Netflix in January 2024 and will reportedly feature six episodes. The series has been in development for eight years before finding a home on Netflix. Vergara is best known for her role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in the ABC comedy series Modern Family, for which she received numerous nominations which include four Golden Globe Awards and four Primetime Emmy Awards.
