The following contains spoilers for The Continental Part 1 "Brothers in Arms", which is now streaming on Peacock.

The Continental is taking audience back into the world of John Wick as it explores the backstory of Winston Scott and the iconic New York hotel. John Wick spent a lot of time in various Continental hotels across the globe, but none was as important or as famous as the New York location. Winston Scott became a foundational character for the series and now The Continental is setting up his own story. Winston's story is already beginning to resemble Mr. Wicks, and that can only help to elevate the character and the franchise.

Winston Scott was the manager of the Continental during the events of the four John Wick films. He is one of John's closest allies and has helped John on multiple occasions by bending the law of the High Table and the Continental. He even calls John by his full name and seems to know much of John's history, even what the audience doesn't know. This is what makes The Continental so intriguing. Fans can finally understand the man behind the power of the Continental and why he shows so much sympathy to John Wick and his mission of revenge.

Winston Scott Was Just Like John Wick

The Continental and John Wick

The first film introduces audiences to John Wick, a former assassin who escaped the life and found love. He began his life with his wife and that was taken from him when she died of an illness. As he was recovering from this loss, the son of a Russian mobster stole his car and killed his dog. This started him down a path of revenge and ended with him fighting the High Table, desperate for the life he lost. Winston Scott begins a similar story as he is unwittingly drawn back to a life that he believed he had left behind years before.

Much of the first episode of The Continental is actually focused on Winston's brother, Frankie. He was involved with the current manager of the Continental, Cormac, who is played by Mel Gibson. Yet, Frankie decides to steal from Cormac, leading to Winston being kidnapped and dragged back to New York to find his brother. This of course ends poorly with Frankie being assassinated and Winston taking care of his sister-in-law. This sets up Winston for his own revenge quest and much like Wick, he is drawn into a life he no longer desired.

The early comparison already helps fans to get a much deeper understanding of why Winston is drawn to John Wick. Not only has he witness John come up through the ranks of the underworld, but in the films they share this connection of being put on a path against their will. John could never have let the death of his dog, the dog that was a last gift from his wife, go any more than Winston will be able to ignore what Cormac did to his brother. This new connection shows audiences how much deeper the John Wick franchise is than the original four movies have let one.

Winston Will Be on the Hunt For Revenge and the Continental

John Wick stopped at nothing to take down the people who hurt him and the memory of his wife. His actions caused the entire fabric of the assassin community to fall apart. Winston Scott's actions could have a similar effect. Winston will likely stop at nothing to avenge his brother's death. Despite being estranged for many years, Frankie was the only family that Winston had. Their parents were long gone, and Cormac even played a part in that. Frankie went back to work for Cormac only so that he could steal from him. Frankie was hoping to set him and his wife, for the rest of their lives, instead he was gunned down on a rooftop.

When Winston sets out for vengeance, the fate of the Continental will be at stake. There are a couple of methods in which Winston could strike out at Cormac and his precious hotel. He could walk through the front door and start his vengeance then and there. He could go directly for Cormac and see how far he gets and how many people he takes with him. This would likely be very unsuccessful as Winston has shown himself to be not a strong physical threat. The better option is to use the High Table against Cormac in the way that it is used against him later in his life. With an Adjudicator already being in the series, it makes sense that the High Table will have a presence in the series. Winston can infiltrate the Continental and strike a deal with the High Table. Removing Cormac can lead to Winston taking over his iconic hotel.

John Wick and Winston Scott are really two sides of the same coin. John Wick tried to leave his life behind, but was only drawn deeper back into it. Winston tried to leave his brother and even New York behind, and it ended with him having to watch his brother die. While John torn down the system with violence, Winston may use a more tactical method. He can bring down the Continental and rebuild by utilizing the High Table. Both John and Winston embarked on quests for vengeance and their worlds will be irrevocable changed.

The Continental streams new episodes every Friday on Peacock.
